Covid's Metamorphoses: Covid-19 Prompts Roots to Postpone Next Two Matches
During the last match, in which Oakland were permitted to carry only a 2-man bench, the USL put out a statement through ESPN that rosters were limited “out of an abundance of caution.” In our recap, the Blog expressed curiosity about that phrase, which could mean practically anything.
Well, we got our answer:
Roots’ next match will now be on July 25, away to Los Dos. On the bright side, hopefully this will be enough time for everyone to clear health and safety protocols, although, if we are being honest, we know better than to be optimistic about that sort of thing. Also, the entire team should be well-rested.
On the other hand, by the time Roots play their 9th match, everyone else in the division will have played 13. There’s some pretty severe fixture congestion coming up: Between August 4 and September 25 (a span of 52 days), Roots will play 14 games, or 1 game every 3.7 days. Plus we still have a home fixture against Sac Republic to make up somewhere (and now have fewer options for that). I hope no one has plans, because we’ve got a lot of soccer to watch.

So, uh, look, if I am the Roots I am absolutely not making any commitments at this point in time. Too many things have gone wrong already. And I appreciate the hard work. The club really does seem to be making the best of a bad situation. But this sounds like the kind of tweet you write if the new field isn’t here yet. There’s plenty of time, of course--the next scheduled home match is now in 18 days. But also we’d rather not cut this one too close! Much love to Las Positas for hosting us, but if it’s all the same to everyone, we’d rather watch footy at Laney. That is the plan. We are working hard to have the turf ready to play at Laney on the 31st.

The Roots' start to the season is Will Ferrell as George W. Bush talking about working 24 hours a week, 7 months a year.
