Town-raised players Max Ornstil and Yohannes Harish scored in quick succession at 25 and 26 minutes.  Oakland trailed 1-0 at 12 minutes after Jorge Hernández banged in a free-kick a foot above the penalty area, but Roots stormed back with some help of a red card against LA's Owen Lamb at 22 minutes. "Good overall performance from the team. We had to dig deep on our bench; a fortunate red card changed the game, I don't know if it was or not, but whatever.... It’s good to get on the win column, but hopefully LA Galaxy II isn’t the only team we are beating this year," said head coach and technical director Jordan Ferrell .  Ferrell believes we're starting to see the Roots roster come together and his favorite starting 11 formulating.  "A little tweak with Quincy [Amar...

Roots move August 14 from Laney to Merritt College. Can Oakland Hills become an option?

In another sudden move, the Oakland Roots announced on August 11 that they are switching its Aug. 14 match against LA Galaxy II from Laney College to Merritt College in the Oakland hills. The team still plans on honoring ticket sales, meaning it seems capacity isn’t an issue. “All tickets purchased for this Saturday’s match will still be valid. A limited number of tickets are still available to secure,” wrote the club. It marks the club’s eighth match moved away from its usual home field, but new transportable field allows them to remain in Oakland instead of playing at Las Positas in Livermore. The club announced on Twitter that its Aug. 14 deadline couldn’t be met in order to prevent disruption of Laney College’s sporting programs despite the field only requiring four hours to install. Hi fam, install time is currently not fast enough to meet the deadline we set in order not to disturb the college sports programs at Laney. We are excited to be in The Town this weekend at Mer...

Covid's Metamorphoses: Covid-19 Prompts Roots to Postpone Next Two Matches

During the last match, in which Oakland were permitted to carry only a 2-man bench, the USL put out a statement through ESPN that rosters were limited “out of an abundance of caution.” In our recap, the Blog expressed curiosity about that phrase, which could mean practically anything. Well, we got our answer: Important Information Regarding This Week's Games. pic.twitter.com/ZQBY8lgRUO — Oakland Roots (@oaklandrootssc) July 13, 2021 Roots’ next match will now be on July 25, away to Los Dos. On the bright side, hopefully this will be enough time for everyone to clear health and safety protocols, although, if we are being honest, we know better than to be optimistic about that sort of thing. Also, the entire team should be well-rested. On the other hand, by the time Roots play their 9th match, everyone else in the division will have played 13. There’s some pretty severe fixture congestion coming up: Between August 4 and September 25 (a span of 52 days), Roots will play 14 games, or 1...
