The Oakland Roots fell 2-1 to Orange County SC on the road in Irvine, watching its record dip to 8-6-11, still holding fourth-place with 30 points.
Tacoma also lost 2-1 on Saturday night to Phoenix, while San Diego extended its lead in second-place with 40 points.
Roots SC dropped points from a winning position after scoring in the 19th minute, but conceding goals in the stoppage time at 45+1 and 90+. The Roots had several clear chances at the net in the first 45 minutes and finished with nine shots, two on target, and eight chances created. However, Oakland only added one more shot attempt off of target in the second half.
Ariel Mbumba scored on a beautifully worked goal in the 19th minute when Johnny Rodriguez worked the ball to Brian Brown, who played it out wide to Mbumba.
While one-on-one with Brent Richards, Mbumba showed off similar footwork to his goal against Sacramento back on June 2--working a triple stepover and a shot through the legs of Richards for the goal.

Memo Diaz had a pair of perfect passes to Rodriguez in the first half that nearly led to goals. One in the 6th minute on a cross in from the midfield, and another to put Rodriguez one-on-one with OCSC's GK Patrick Rakovsky--but the Roots' striker tried to dribble around the keeper and his shot was closed out.
Roots had two more chances before the half; Max Ornstil had a shot blocked at 31' after receiving a long ball from a set-piece by Jose Hernandez. Then in the 46th, Brian Brown was one-on-one with Rakovsky on a field-length pass from Paul Blanchette, but he couldn't corral the ball for a clean attempt.
At 45+1, OCSC got its goal after Mbumba committed a foul and led to a set-piece. Brian Iloski's cross landed to Michael Orozco for the goal--enabling his really lame celebration. It marked their third goal this season conceded in first-half stoppage time--a familiar sight replayed in the second half.
Then in the second half, Jeremy Bokila had a pair of looks after subbing on at 72 minutes. He had a free header sky over the net at 76' after receiving a cross from Akeem O'Connor-Ward; then a pass from Ward trailed behind him in the penalty area the following minute.
In the 81st minute, the referee made a dastardly no-call on Hernandez in the penalty area after nutmegging Ronaldo Damus along the touchline, resulting in the OCSC forward making a toss on Hernandez that was more reminiscent of WWE than soccer.
Instead of rewarding Hernandez for his supreme technical ability on OCSC's star player, he ate his whistle. Hernandez then ate a cleat to his ankle moments later, another no-call.
OCSC got a corner opportunity at 90+1' and what happened, happened. The ball trickeled to Mikko Kuningas a few feet in front of goal for the tap-in.
